Wedding Suit of Christian VII.

Denmark, 1765

following the original still in existence (right), which is part of the Royal Danish Collection at Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen.

Most grateful regards to the administration of the Royal Danish Collection, Rosenborg Castle, Copenhagen, particularly Katia Johansen, for offering so much support!

To reproduce a wardrobe, which originally was worn by a powerful monarch, on the occasion of his wedding with the Princess Caroline Mathilde of the English royal family, was an unusual and therefore great challenge. Almost nine months recherche, preparations, arrangement and manufacturing were dedicated to this project. The whole world was travelled, from Copenhagen to India. For this reason, but much rather because of the nice and unvaluable support of Ms Katia Johansen, curator of the Royal Danish Collection, this robe has become a masterpiece of authentic, courtly clothing, which has neither been worn nor been made in our century.

The fabric was woven specially, as a quite unusual silk was used for the original. To reconstruct it as close as possible, the original was studied most carefully, researching the thread with and the pattern. The result is an entirely natural, undyed Organzin-silk woven with pure silver, altogether ca. 3 kg.
The richness of the embroidery presents itself on the back and general view. Following the original piece, not only pockets and cuffs are embroidered, but also the back pleats, shoulder and sleeve seams.
Particular eye-catcher are the waistcoat and the cuffs, which are covered with a narrow and lavish pattern.
Antique Alencon-Lace, dating back to the 18th century, along with a paste stone brooch, original, too, are applied to the shirt.Every single stitch of the heavy embroidery has been made by hand. Their pattern follows the real wedding suit, which we were allowed to study in detail.
